The Southampton Business Alliance presented a $5,565 check to the Hampton Bays Education Foundation on June 24th to help defray the out-of-pocket cost of tools and other gear that East End BOCES Career and Tech students need. The Southampton Business Alliance & The Southampton Housing Initiative Corporation have traditionally awarded 2 scholarships each year to graduating seniors going on to higher education for a 4-year business degrees and a 2-year trade school degree in the building trades. There are plenty of others doing awards for 4-year business students and unfortunately few students from our Township going on to 2-year associate or trade school building industry degrees. The need to qualified help here is acute, as we are all aware.
So this year the Board decided to try something new by supporting students entering our fine Eastern Suffolk BOCES building trades programs. Research shows that career trades education gives kids an overall better high school performance and graduation rate, and of course gives them job-ready credentials. The BOCES programs come at price, because the student must report for school “job ready” with uniforms and tool kits that can range up to $400.
While we are developing awards criteria for future years, we made a big impact this year by giving a tool kit to every one of the Township’s 18 kids entering a building trades program this coming September. The presentation was made on June 24th at Hampton Bays High School at an event attended by BOCES staff, administrative staff from the Township’s high schools and students and parents.
